RESEARCH
Ph.D.
I am being supervised by Associate Prof. Rashina Hoda (Monash University, Australia) Dr. Chakkrit Tantithamthavorn (Monash University, Australia), and Adjunct Prof. Burak Turhan (University of Oulu, Finland). My Ph.D. thesis titled "Understanding Ethics in AI/ML Development: AI Practitioner Perspectives and Experiences" focuses on exploring the ethical dimensions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) development. It investigates the perspectives and experiences of AI practitioners to gain insights into ethical issues within AI development processes, particularly concerning fairness.
In my research, I employed mixed-method approaches to delve into AI practitioners' perceptions of AI ethics and their experiences in developing ethical AI-based systems. Using the Grounded Theory Literature Review, I developed a comprehensive taxonomy of AI ethics from practitioners' perspectives, offering insights into the key challenges they encounter in developing ethical AI-based systems. I investigated industry perspectives on AI practitioners' awareness of AI ethics, the challenges in fostering ethical AI-based systems, and their comprehension of fairness in AI/ML systems, along with the associated challenges and strategies for ensuring fairness. An interactive Ethical AI Quiz was also developed and assessed as part of my Ph.D. project to raise awareness of AI ethics among practitioners. The findings of my Ph.D. project can be found in publications across venues like Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (TOSEM), Empirical Software Engineering (EMSE), and the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE).
